No, it's actually "pane", as in "window pane".

In gretl CVS, you can split the output window in two, to make it easier to
see different parts of the output script (possibly far away from each
other) simultaneously. This is a way of working that we aristocrats (ie
Emacs users) are quite fond of, although I personally like it even better
when the split is vertical.
