Never mind, it was just that I missed that the "country" variable was
string-valued in the first place, and then the routine on the R side
expected numbers, so that was the hiccup. Everything seems to work as
intended, so that's fine. The trick is really to know that on the gretl
side copying a string-valued series to another series converts it to
numbers. This is perhaps a bit surprising, but is documented alright.
