I have compiled gnuplot 4.4 in Lucid running in VirtualBox on Mac OS X 10.6.3.
I didn't install or uninstall the standard gnuplot.
You'll need to compile gd.
You may have to install some additional libraries and development packages (can't
remember).
See the attached scripts which should reside in the same directory as the gd...tar.gz and
gnuplot...tar.gz archives.
