On a qwerty keyboard, the Alt key on the left to the spacebar and the "1"
key above the "q" key shouldn't be more far apart than 7-8 cm (that's 3
inches for you unfortunate savages). The way I use the Alt-1, Alt-2 combos
is typically with my thumb on the Alt key and my index finger on the
numeric key.
