 One more follow-up on this. We should probably aim to extend the binary 
 matrix transfer facility for R too, and maybe octave. But I'm not going 
 to hold the next release for that;  
Absolutely agreed. It was never intended to delay the release, this just 
happens to happen at the same time as release preparations.
 a little fiddly, for two reasons. 
Yeah -- I had actually briefly thought about the column- or row-major 
thing, but the endianness thing would have escaped me for sure.
(Maybe big endian not so unlikely if run on an HPC server?)
