The thing is that gig is now an "addon", which is treated
specially, and not a regular contributed function package. The
last version of gig as a regular function package was indeed
2.0 (January 2011), but it shouldn't be there any more, among
the "on server" packages. I didn't notice that it was still
there, but now I have removed it.

That's their date as dd-mm-yyyy; gig was last packaged on
October 13 of this year.[*]
Oops, I should have written dd-mm-yyyy).

Which package were you trying to install? I just tried a
couple of new ones and they installed OK. As another check I
removed my local copy of the SVAR package, went to /Help/
Check for addons, and chose to install SVAR. That went OK too,
but I'll try testing on OS X.
I apparently didn't have the addon SVAR. I did Help/Check for addons and successfully
installed it.
But for example I don't have function file moran installed. (Files, Function files, On
server)
When I click install I get the message "Couldn't find moran for gretl
1.9.7".
