I agree. IMHO, writing test scripts for contributed function packages is
be something the package writers should do. How am I supposed to write a
test script for econometric techniques I may know nothing about?
I agree it's ideal if the package authors also provide test cases, but
simply calling a function doesn't require that you understand the
results. I'd say that most of the time a backwards-incompatible change
will give a plain error instead of wrong results. (Not always, of course.)
The more widespread gretl wants to become, the more stable its
programming interface needs to be, IMHO. For every user who openly
complains about a problem she has with gretl (on the lists or wherever),
there are many many more users who simply discard it silently and move on.
