I'm trying to build the last version of Gretl using git. But after I run the
./configure command I have the following error:

Yes. You need to modify your /etc/apt/sources.list files appropriately.
You can do this by hand, or
1) Open synaptic (with root privileges)
2) Go to Settings > Repositories
3) Enable source code repositories
4) Reload the package information
Then everything should work

repositories using 'nano' instead of 'synaptic'. I'm using an AWS-cli
server so there is not any GUI. Please let me know which deb library should I modify.

OK. Under /etc/apt/ you'll have either a sources.list file or a
sources.list.d directory with a few files in it. One of them should
contain a few lines like
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy universe
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy-updates universe
all you have to do is add some more lines where the only difference is
that you have "deb-src" instead of "deb", as in
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy universe
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy-updates universe
After you've done that, run
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get build-dep gretl
and you should be ok.

I sincerely regret this comment. I am a real fan of Gretl, and I wouldn't dare to
bother you on the mailing lists if I haven't reviewed the documentation in deep first.
The problem also happens with Linux Debian9 libraries. For some of us is not so bright the
documentation in how to build the program in the Linux servers. But in any case, I
appreciate the response.

repository" you'll find thousands of web pages that explain in detail what
needs to be done and why (much better than I did in my earlier messages).
I'm glad you're building gretl from source on a Linux server, and it's a
good thing that our exchange happened on the mailing list so that it
remains archived, but the gretl mailing list is not the best place to ask
for information on something that is essentially a sysadmin task on a
class of Linux distros (that is, Debian derivatives).

Well, it has to be said that this thread didn't start out as a question
of how to add source repos, but about a certain error message from the
gretl configure script that did not indicate the solution to do 'apt
gretl build-dep'.
Also I just rechecked Appendix B of the guide about building gretl and
it only says that going via build-dep would make it simpler. It doesn't
say that it is necessary if you manually install the dev stuff. But
Leonardo showed that GMP (-dev) was installed, so it still isn't clear
to me why the whole thing failed in the first place or what the
appropriate error message should have been.

By the way Leonardo: Interesting that you want to run gretl on a cloud
AWS server. In case you're planning also to run a Docker container incl.
gretl, let me know. I've uploaded one already to docker-hub and could
update it to the latest gretl version.
