When will the next stable version of gretl (1.6.1 or 1.7.0, I guess) be

Sorry, this has taken longer than anticipated.
The thing is that over the last several weeks we've had a flurry
of useful bug-reports and suggestions, mostly pertaining to
relatively new (or hitherto little-used) features of the program
(e.g. matrix manipulation; the graphical interface for
user-defined functions; the "session saving" mechanism that came
in with 1.6.0; shell commands). And it has seemed worth waiting
to get more of these things right.
However, that stream of reports has now slowed down, and I think
we should release soon. I would guess we can get a release out
within the next 2 weeks.

I remember a discussion of the session saving stuff in relation to
whether or not 'run' should be enabled in functions; but what exactly
was added in terms of session management in the end? (Again, if it's in
the latest manual, just tell me.)

Thanks for pointing this out, having an (even rough) estimate for the release
time (and maybe the main goals for each release) can only benefit contributors
(old and new ones).
By the way, do you think that the contents of persistent.tex are stabilized
enough to start translating the file?

True. As for the goals, I agree it would be useful to articulate
them (even though they might evolve as we approach them).

Yes. That chapter stills need to be exapnded, but what is already
there is, I think, probably there to stay!

I think I've discovered another small bug (today's CVS):
If 'append' is used with a native gretl file, the new data replaces the
old dataset instead of just being appended. (In contrast, it works as
advertised with csv files.)
The following script demonstrates.
open denmark
series test1 = LRM
store ./testdata.gdt test1
delete test1
append ./testdata.gdt
