There's a bug here alright, but parentheses are not ignored in general:
? eval 3-2*4
-5
? eval (3-2)*4
4
The bug is specific to successive instances of the exponentiation
operator, a case which requires special treatment to impose the most
common order of evaluation of x^y^z. Apparently a (fairly recent)
change to the "genr" apparatus has broken the special treatment
code. It'll be fixed soon.
Now fixed in git and snapshots.
