I've been asked for information about translating gretl; maybe it's useful to
have some reference info in the list archives for future use, so I'm forwarding
my reply to the list.
(maybe we could even turn it into a brief explanation to be added to the
"devel"
section of the website, so feel free to complete/correct the text)

Hi, gretl (as most Free Software projects) uses the GNU gettext library (a.k.a.
the ".po files" system) for translating the program messages. You can find
information about gettext at
http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gettext
The easiest way to start a translation is to get the relevant .pot file from the
gretl page at the "GNU Translation Project" site
http://translationproject.org/domain/gretl.html
and send the (even partially) translated el.po file to Allin Cottrell, who will
incorporate it into the future versions of the program. Later, if you decide to
maintain the greek translation on a regular basis, you can join the GNU
Translation Project (an alternative option is to get access to the gretl CVS, as
explained on the gretl home page on SourceForge).
For the moment, I suggest you to:
- get in touch with the Greek GNU translation team at
http://translationproject.org/team/el.html
who will be a useful guidance for general translation issues and the TP
functioning.
- subscribe to the gretl-users and gretl-devel mailing lists at
http://gretl.sourceforge.net/lists.html
who will be useful for all gretl-related questions
Hope this helps!
