Hi,
some months ago I edited the "genr" chapter 10 of the user guide, and in
the introduction 10.1 the goal was to describe all cases where using the
keyword "genr" was actually required. I think at the time nobody noticed
that the special construct "genr markers" was omitted. (It is explained
somewhere else buried in the guide.)
Is that still true, I mean is "genr markers" still necessary for what it
does, or is there another equivalent syntax?

OK, so what's possible is to create a strings array with the wanted
content, say S, and then use "markers --from-array=S" to create the
markers without using "genr".
However, creating the strings array in the first place only seems
possible with an explicit loop AFAICS. Here's an example:

reproducible crash:

</hansl-crash>
I think I know where my mistake is, but as always, it shouldn't crash.
This is with a snapshot from four weeks back, on Windows.

Same with current git. Of course, the crash doesn't occur if you fill the
series with something, as in
series countrycodes = time
but you're right, the crash shouldn't happen.

So here goes an extremely artificial example:

Obviously, the substitute way currently is still very clunky. Perhaps in
the future sprintf() could be somehow extended or overloaded to work
with string-valued series directly.
Of course this whole business is not very important. It's just that
"genr markers" is not documented very transparently. I will try to add a
bullet item to the list in section 10.1 of the manual.
