I would like to be on CVS Gretl but I have failed in building Gretl on my
Mac with 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion). I am able to build Gretl on Ubuntu. Are
there any recent descriptions on how to build on Mac?

There aren't up to date instructions at this point; it would
be good to produce an update. However, the GTK framework
package that we make available at sourceforge contains headers
and pkg-config files, so that it should be possible to build
gretl without having to build GTK first -- after setting
PKG_CONFIG_PATH suitably.
The other dependencies, such as GMP and fftw, would have to be
installed/built first.
Where/how does the build fail for you?

In addition you will have to compile everything in 32-bit mode (with gcc option -arch i386
if you are using Apple compilers and the equivalent for the linker).
The other dependencies, such as GMP and fftw, would have to be

In addition you should show the exact commands you used.
Note: I have not tried to compile Gretl on Mac OS X 10.8.X but I do compile Gretl on Mac
OS X 10.6.8 (in a slightly different way than the official gretl but that shouldn't
matter) without any trouble at all. I use Platypus to make a Mac application Gretl.app).

Another thought on this. At first I built the gretl packages using
Fink on OS X. Later I switched to cross-building on Linux which is
much more convenient for me, but I see that Fink is still
maintained, and is available for OS X 10.8.2.
The Fink option may be worth considering. It gives you a Linux-like
mechanism -- just d/l the "devel" packages for all the gretl
dependencies then configure/make/make install. It's not so easy to
make an "App" package that way, but it's fairly straightforward to
get a working build from CVS for your own use.

Homebrew and MacPorts install 64-bit libraries (I haven't tried Fink) so I
tried to build the libraries myself. However, after three hours I have
not succeeded. When trying to build gtksourceview I get

I have created a zip file containing my build scripts including the dependencies.
Download it with curl -O http://bhh.home.xs4all.nl/Gretl/Gretl.build.zip
(.zip file also conatins Appledot files ._XXXXX)
You must have XQuartz installed on Mountain Lion.
You will need the Apple gcc compiler and Platypus.
I assume you already have gnuplot.

The main thing about my build is that all dependencies are static libraries.
Everything is linked into libgretl.X.Y.dylib

Possibly. I'll see if I can build a Linux to OS X 64-bit cross
toolchain. 64-bit gretl in itself is not a problem, just the
cross-compoilation. (And of course we'd have to make a 64-bit GTK
framework.)

Great. Thank you Santa. I have spend this morning playing with it and your
build
works on my machine. I am also able to build gretl except that it
seems to have references to /Applications/Gretl.app/Contents etc... even
though I install it in /opt/local. Is this intended? I thought a homemade
build would reside completely inside /opt/local if I did
--prefix=/opt/local. When I run /opt/local/bin/gretl when the Gretl.app is
not present I get
"...
/Applications/Gretl.app/Contents/Resources/share/gretl/ui/gretlmain.xml":
No such file or directory"
and I cannot really figure out why is looking there. The file resides in
/opt/local/share/gretl/ui/gretlmain.xml.

Your expectation agrees with mine: if you build and install
gretl with --prefix=/opt/local it shouldn't be looking for
anything under /Applications/Gretl.app.
When I run /opt/local/bin/gretl when the Gretl.app is

Spon on. Now it works. I was not aware of that file affecting the build.
By the way. I have experimented a bit and I am able to build with all
dependencies provided from Homebrew except GTK+(version 2.24). For some
reason it does not work. Personally, I am happy now as I can build CVS
Gretl so the following is just some thoughts for the future. Maybe it is
worth considering if Gretl could be build with all dependencies from
Homebrew and provide a brew recipe (they are really simple) because then
Mac user could get Gretl just by writing "brew install gretl". Just a
thought.

It shouldn't affect the build (that would be a bug if so), but
it will affect the run-time behavior, pointing gretl to the
wrong location for the ui file.

I've found it exceedingly tricky to build the full GTK stack
on OS X. The stack we provide uses quite old versions of the
libraries, but it all plays nicely together. I've tried
updating various bits of it and ended up with breakage.
One thing I'd like to try at some point is building GTK3 with
native quartz support (no X11). Last time I tried I got a big
mess, but I guess things have improved since then.
Personally, I am happy now as I can build CVS Gretl so the
