I may be missing your point too. But please let me explain my
motivation a bit further:
1)- This is indeed a good, failsafe way of saying to the students
"Please open the notes." Besides not everyone is my student.
2)- It is based on a perceived demand.
3)- It should be relatively easy to implement.
4)- It can even be made optional, say, with a checkbox.
