Have you tried "LANGUAGE"?
For example:

No, I have not tried.
Now that I did, it works, but found another problem:
- With LANGUAGE=LANG=pt_BR the translation for Commands and Functions help
are not showing.
- They only show when LANGUAGE=LANG=pt_PT
I was expecting that they would work for the main language pt.
This setting of variable LANGUAGE makes use a bit more tricky, because if I
want to force pt_BR on the GUI it does not work.
I tried to set to forced Italian and it did not work. With that setting, I
tried:
LANGUAGE=es_ES gretl
And changed to Spanish, but the setting remained Italian.
Conclusion, the forced setting of language in GUI is not working as
expected.

using the command-line,

or by selection under /Tools/Preferences/General.

show on your system? Here I get:

For good measure I've also tried on Arch Linux. There were a couple
of differences.
1) "LANG=<whatever> gretl" doesn't work: apparently the LANG setting
doesn't get through the shell script ("gretl" on Linux being a shell
script). But it does work if you specify gretlcli or gretl_x11
directly.
2) The translated help files DO appear when pt_BR is selected. This
suggests there must be some system setting for language fallback
that's not present on Fedora.
On Arch, as on Fedora 31, setting the language to pt or pt_BR via
the GUI preferences works fine.
