Hi Allin, Jack and other developers :)
I have been unable to get CVS gretl running on my Linux for some time now,
but recently I have made some progress.
I solved the problem of gretl looking for the old library by deleting .gretl
directory.
Now I have gretl_x11 running, working well all menu entries except when I
need to open a file. The program crashes (with Bugzilla window appearing)
after loading the file (yes, I can see the variables list and info at shell
window). I am sorry to say but I have not tried to open a file in gretlcli.
I have messed around by having set main directory other than
/usr/local/share/gretl (got report of bad directory). Also solved by
deleting .gretl directory.

Well, there are some unwarned problems in the compilation process, because
to have gretl_x11 compiled I must cd to gui2 and do a make there. The
configure script reports all OK.
I still have to make buildstamp manually to proceed with compilation. This
happens because of plugins requiring build.h. So, my suggestion is to add
builstamp before lib at the plugins entry:
plugin: buildstamp lib
This solved my problem (but since it calls a perl script would it be harmful
for Windows/OS X?).

I'll re-read the rest of what you say, but on first sight, the most
likely cause of your problems is corruption or mix-up of versions in
your CVS tree. (For one thing you refer to a "perl script" -- there
has only been one such, and it was removed from gretl CVS years
ago.)
Please delete your gretl CVS tree and do a fresh checkout from
sourceforge. If you still have problems, then get back to us.

Deleting your ~/.gretl directory will not do any harm, but neither
will it help if gretl's configuration is confused, since it contains
no configuration information.
The file to delete if you're worried about a possibly confused
configuration is ~/.gretl2rc (a plain text file, not a directory).
I've said this before, but if you're a long-term gretl CVS user it
is important that the command you use for doing your CVS updates is
cvs update -d -P
The "-d" says to add any new directories that have been created in
the repository. These are not added by default with a plain "cvs
update", but the gretl build will surely be broken if you do not add
new directories as they appear.
The "-P" says to prune (delete) files that are in your local copy
but have been removed from the repository. Again, this does not
happen by default, but the presence of stale files in your CVS tree
may well break the gretl build.
In addition, it's important to pay attention to any messages you get
from cvs when updating. From time to time cvs may report an
inconsistency between what's in your local copy and what's on the
server. For example, if you have modified a file relative to what is
on the server but have not committed your modification. Such
inconsistencies are, once again, likely to break the build.
If inconsistencies accumulate, the best approach is to delete your
whole CVS tree and start again.

Hi Allin,
Thanks for your help. I have now gretl running OK.
Getting a fresh CVS tree did not fix the crash.
It was fixed by installing gtkextra <http://gtkextra.sourceforge.net/>;. I
saw this as a dependency in the Portuguese Gretl page but not in the
English. In my OpenSuSE 11.4 environment is clearly a Required dependency,
not Optional.
(Well if we only want gretlcli is optional)
Can you please do the following recommendations?
- Verify the required condition of gtkextra+ to build gretl_x11
- Update the dependencies gretl pages (please have a separator for
gretlcli/gretllib and gretl_x11)
- Modify the configure script to have a check for gtkextra+

I'm sure that's not the case. I should say that Ignacio
Diaz-Emparanza reported a gretl crash to me recently, which I fixed
in today's CVS. This was due to a very obscure bug (which gretl
apparently shared with a large number of projects that use the
libxml2 XML-processing library), namely calling libxml2's "clean up"
function more than once.
I have never seen this bug bite myself, but maybe it was responsible
for the crashes you saw.
But as for gtkextra: a long time ago we made some use of that
library, but we no longer use it in any way. The gretl C files
include no gtkextra headers, make no calls to the gtkextra library,
nothing. It is definitely not a dependency, optional or mandatory.

Ah, it looks like the "compat2" option has been removed in the
geometry.sty file you have on your TeX system. I'll look into ways
of working around that.
