Folks,
I've had a few things on my wish list for gretl for some time now, and in preparation
for the coming semester I thought I'd finally get around to proposing them. These are
features that are available on other programs that I use (matlab mostly), that I think
would streamline gretl a bit (for me, anyway).
1) have some way to clear the console window (but retain the command history), like
clc in matlab
2) allow formatting of rtf model output similar to what's available for LaTeX
(number of digits reported, etc)
3) allow matrices to be copied or exported from the icon view to excel, latex, csv,
etc. Being able to control the number of digits would be nice here too.
Any thoughts?

Why is that a useful thing? (I know it seems to be a popular
notion, that any sort of terminal-like application should have a
"clear screen" function, but I don't understand its popularity.

If you've ever tried to code an RTF table... Sorry, but the RTF
table syntax is seriously, seriously horrible to the point of
being almost unusable. (One index of how horrible it is: a
slightly mal-formed RTF table can easily crash any Microsoft
Office application. Yes, crash it, not just have the table
rejected.) I really don't want to go there, but if any other brave
soul is willing then we'll entertain patches.

I did successfully created a program that outputted a two column table with
header.
Maybe is a too simple example, but I would like to contribute to
Gretl code with this. What do you think, Allin? Should I get my hands dirty
on this? ;)

You're welcome, Hélo. One thing to realize is that for printing
model results we need an initial string column (the parameter
name) followed by three numeric columns (coefficient, standard
error, p-value), followed by an additional string column (if
you're interested), namely the number of "stars" or asterisks to
award to the coefficient, based on its statistical significance.
For printing a matrix in RTF, of course, we require an arbitrary
(that is, at compile-time unknown) number of numeric columns.

Thanks for the response, Allin.
1) clear console: granted, this is mainly aesthetic. Maybe because I was used to
gauss/matlab when I started with gretl, I like to be able to clean up the console from
time to time. One difference between gretl and matlab, which may push me in favor of
"never mind," is that there's no "script output" in gauss/matlab.
So if I'm debugging a program in one of those, being able to clear the console
isn't just aesthetic -- it's important for keeping track of errors, etc. Not an
issue in gretl. [btw, I'm usually not anal-compulsive enough with such things ;-)]
2) rtf format: I had a hunch that serious horribleness might be the case with this. Would
it be possible to add an option to "set" that would control significant digits?
Or would that not play nice with rtf either? I should mention that I bring this up wearing
my teacher hat -- for my research I use LaTeX.

To me this sounds like a typical don't-reinvent-the-wheel thing. There
must be some conversion tool out there that does this. Maybe with the
help of latex an enhanced RTF-export could be offered (only if latex is
present on the system, of course)?

Hmm, latex2rtf might be usable in this context. It wouldn't
require latex itself; gretl could write a simplified latex table
and pass it through latex2rtf. That program is quite bulky but I
suppose we'd only need a fairly small subset of its functionality,
if it's not too tiresome to strip out the subset we need.
