After hearing a lot about problems with installing gretl on OS
X 10.8 I managed to borrow a current MacBook Pro from a
student and have walked through the installation process
myself (the machine had no previous gretl installation and no
XQuartz or GTK).
It went fine, although some aspects of the operation were
potentially confusing (in particular the way that new disk
image windows open _behind_ the Safari window so it kind if
looks like nothing has happened unless you minimize the
browser).
Anyway, I wrote up some detailed blow-by-blow instructions,
which I'm attaching. If any Mac users have points to add or
correct, please let me know. Then I'll put the instructions on
the website in some form.

Up till now I've pretty much been assuming that Mac users know
how to install software from a dmg, but it seems that's not so
for many users. Also a first-time gretl installation on ML is
admittedly a bit complicated since you have to install three
separate packages.
I suppose we could think about bundling GTK in the gretl dmg,
which would cut out one step.

how to install software from a dmg, but it seems that's not so

admittedly a bit complicated since you have to install three
separate packages.
I agree. This installation procedure is not "Mac-like" and because of
that doesn't provide a good first impression.
I suppose we could think about bundling GTK in the gretl dmg,
which would cut out one step.
I have a suggestion (that I get myself thinking about for a long
time): I think the size of modern software increased a lot over time,
so I think it's acceptable that we have a bigger installation file :-)
Also we could bundle Gretl and GTK together (and even X-12 and Tramo).

The downside of greater bundling is that you'd have to
download a whopping great file every time you update. I
suppose we could consider (a) packaging GTK in the gretl
releases for Mac, but (a) not putting GTK into the snapshot
files. That could get confusing, though.
One thing that Mac experts might be able to help with: how to
make the gretl package offer a more "Mac-like" experience for
the user? I know a little bit about that, but I never use OS X
"seriously" myself so my knowledge is seriously incomplete.
And I cross-build the Mac dmg.gz files on Linux. I suppose we
could switch to a mode in which we build an installer for
gretl releases (not snapshots) on OS X itself -- since there
are limits on how truly Mac-like a cross-built package can be.

They look ok to me.
It would be a good idea to emphasize that on Mountain Lion Finder windows have a tendency
to open behind other windows (on Snow Leopard they most often don't do that)(in
general Finder on Mountain Lion sometimes acts strangely especially when opening a window
the first time after login).
It might be a good idea to make a Mac OS X installer package for the framework.
It has to be installed in a specific location.
In that case the instructions could be simplified to: download GTK2-framework.pkg and
XQuartz.pkg. Double click and off you go.
I have made an installer package from the initial "virgin" GTK+.framework that
will install the framework in /Library/Frameworks of the system disk.
It can be downloaded with: curl -O http://bhh.home.xs4all.nl/Gretl/GTK2-framework.pkg
I would separate the instructions into two sections:
1. First time install: installing XQuartz and GTK+.framework
2. Installing Gretl.
The first sentence of the instructions contains a spelling error: instaling ==>
installing.
If the GTK Framework is put into the gretl dmg the instructions would be more involved I
think.
So I would suggest to not include the framework in the gretl package.

Yes. I did try to make that point but maybe it could be
emphasized more heavily. (Also, on earlier OS X mounting a dmg
produced an icon on the Desktop -- one that's easily
recognizable as a mounted image once you've seen it a couple
of times. But that's now gone in Mountain Lion.)

I was also thinking about that.
It would certainly make it a lot easier to install Gretl.
But it's quite a lot work.

Took me a while, but I've now tested this package, and it's a
easier-to-use alternative to the dmg file we've been offering
up till now. So I've uploaded your pkg to sourceforge and
edited our Mac-intel page to point it as the recommended
