Greetings, There seems to be a problem in the code for the ordered logit/probit model in GRETL. I'm getting different predictions in GRETL and R. It's possible that there is some bug in the code. more function package news

I said I'd have gretl 1.8.4 out by now, but I found that fixing problems with the user-function GUI led me further "down the rabbit hole" than I expected. I discovered quite a lot of code in lib/src/gretl_func.c, and also in the associated GUI C files, that was partially duplicated and/or not readily comprehensible, which may well count for the "flakiness" that Sven mentioned. I've therefore done a good deal of clean-up (plus addition of comments) in those areas. I've also relaxed what I think was the most awkward limitation in the function-package design up to gretl 1.8.3, namely the fact that a package could only have one public interface. Now packages can contain as many public (and private) functions as you like. This is all good, but as with all new code it needs some testing. So if anyone can find some time over the next few days to beat on anything to do with editing or calling function packages, I'd be very grateful. Then we'll get gretl 1.8.4 out. Reminder: cleaned-up function packages for use with current CVS gretl can be found at http://www.wfu.edu/~cottrell/newgfn/ Two further comments: * At present you define the list of functions belonging to a package at the time of initial construction of the package; and there's no way, in the GUI, to add or remove functions from a package. I plan to remedy this before long, but probably not for the 1.8.4 release. * Now that packages can offer more than one public function there's a potential ambiguity over the "Help text". I've resolved this for now by locating the Help at the package level. That is, suppose you have a package "sfa" that has public functions "sfa_mod" and "sfa_hetmod" (I'm taking a possible reorganization of Gordon Hughes's contribution as an example). In that case the help text that you enter in the GUI package editor should cover both functions. If the user does "help sfa_mod" or "help sfa_hetmod", in either case they'll get a redirect to the help text for the parent package. Allin.

plot export problems with pdf (and eps)

Dear all, [first I thought of sending this to the users list, but it's neither asking for help nor giving useful advice, so here it goes to gretl-devel instead] today I had to add the (hopefully) finishing touch to a paper, and that included replacing the png graphics with scalable vector graphic formats (read: pdf). Those png graphs had originally been produced with gretl (of course!). The (known, I think) problem was again that all the changes to font sizes and thicker line widths etc. show up fine in the png output produced from gretl's "builtin" gnuplot --well actually there are some issues like overlap of tick labels and axes, but anyway--, but not at all in the pdf (or eps) versions. That was a show-stopper for me once again. I did not really find a gretl/gnuplot-based solution, at least none that I could master. I'm sure it's possible in theory to tweak the gnuplot commands so that it gets it right even for the pdf terminal, but that's beyond my gnuplot knowledge, and the gnuplot documentation is not very accessible, as I have said before. So in the end I used R (from within gretl, of course!) to produce those graphs, and after some trial-and-error and browsing R graphics documentation I got good results. My point is: it seems that getting publication-quality scalable graphs in pdf and/or eps format is currently still a weak spot of gretl. Except if I'm missing something, then I would be grateful for any hints. Otherwise, my guess is that many users would benefit from improvements in this area, and it would make a transition away from Eviews or PcGive more feasible for them. thanks for reading, sven

Compiling Gretl on Snow Leopard

I am trying to compile Gretl 1.8.4 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I do this without using anything from Fink or MacPorts. With Leopard this went smoothly. However on Snow Leopard Gretl's libtool generates an error. The error is that /usr/lib/libiconv.la cannot be found. (In addition there is also no /usr/lib/libxml2.la) Apparently in Snow Leopard there are no .la files for anything that is in /usr/lib. What could be a solution? Berend

Small bug in saving package

Hi, lets run following simple script and save it as new package: <script> function scalar foo (scalar alpha[0:1:0.1]) printf "alpha is: %f\n", alpha end function </script? We would expect, that when we run this package in GUI default value of alpha will be "0.1" but is "0". Vista oddity

Yesterday one of our PhD students came to me with the weirdest thing: she previously had two separate gretl installs on different subdirectories (don't ask me why) on her Windows Vista PC. After removing them both, she proceeded to install 1.8.4. The install went fine, except for one thing: double-clicking an existing gdt or inp file launched gretl alright, but running gretlw32 "dry" produced an instance of gretl with no menu bar (!!!); I'm no Vista expert, but I managed to go back to normal by: 1) uninstalling gretl 2) deleting everything gretl-related from the registry via regedit (long and boring) 3) re-installing gretl I have no idea why this worked, but it did. If someone more windows-savvy than I am (doesn't take much) could see to it...
