our way around in our own files, a lot of the code was initially tailored
to the CSV assumption. I think we took it for granted that the principal
real-world use of join would be with files from third-party sources.
Yes, fair enough. In the present case I'm using 'join' as a kind of
workaround to the problem that appending to panel data is too fragile
IMO if you don't use index variables, which you can only do with 'join'.
So the first-best (longer-term) solution would be to enhance the
handling of panel datasets. The 'join' thing would be the second-best
solution.
