Attached you find a picture. Nothing 'greyed out' here. Also:
When I
click on "Garch variants" a menu opens stating that the gig package was

OMG. This is on Ubuntu, I take it? Ubuntu has been known before for
somehow intercepting and (sorry, there's no other word for it)
fucking about with the menu mechanism for third-party GUI
applications. I can only suppose they've done it again here.
When gretl is in the "no dataset" state only the following menus
should be accessible: File, Tools and Help. All the rest should be
insensitive ("grayed out"). Many if not all items under the other
menus assume there's a dataset in place and it's not at all
suprising that you get a crash if you're somehow able to access them
without a dataset.
Can I ask: has anyone seen what Artur is describing (all menus
accessible even with no data in place) on any OS other than Ubuntu?
