OK. This is with git from 5 weeks ago on Windows. Maybe I can retest
later on a new snapshot. But the MPI arena hasn't been touched recently

With the latest snapshot I also get the error alright. The previous
version was my self-compiled GTK3-based installation. I'm wondering
whether building under MinGW and with GTK3 might have an influence on
the MPI execution.
(In principle it did run with and without MPI, so the setup in prinicple
seemed OK.)
