Some time ago I had suggested to move to SVN (subversion), but in the meantime I have changed my mind to an attitude of "don't change a working setup". But maybe the times of a working setup are over?

By "clear and reliable transition path" I take it you mean "we don't lose stuff", including the history of commits. While from the user's point of view the latest version is all that matters, I believe it is EXTREMELY important to be able to track all the changes in the source for a number of reasons. If we don't lose that, I'm ready to move to svn any time, if necessary.
