My progress on building gretl on windows so far:
After downloading and installing MinGW and MSYS I downloaded and installed
the all-in-on bundle of GTK+ for win32 on
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/binaries/win32/gtk+/2.14/gtk+-bundle_2.14....
I then installed all files from
http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/pub/gretl/winbuild/ following the instructions
there.
When typing "make" in c:\gretl\win32 all goes well until I get the
following error message:
../plugin/audio.c:44:19: sapi.h No such file or directory
I cannot find sapi.h in c:\ming\include and it was not included in the
mingw-extra.zip file on http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/pub/gretl/winbuild/, but
I found that it was included in an older file mingw_lib_inc.zip that
previously was available on that site.
I copied the sapi.h file and added it to c:\ming\include. Typing "make"
started the process again, until I get the error message below. How do I
solve this?

Thanks. I've now updated mingw-extra.zip to include sapi.h.

I'll work on that today. Here's the story: gretlres.coff is
supposed to be a replacement for the old file gretlw32_res.o.
This is a Windows "resources" file, containing the program icons,
and it gets built using the program "windres".
I noticed yesterday that when I built gretl on Windows everything
was fine apart from the colored icons: these were somehow
scrambled. However, they come out OK if I cross-build the
resources file on Linux. So gretlres.coff is a cross-built file
which I added to CVS. I gave it the suffix ".coff" rather than
".o" so it wouldn't get deleted by "make clean" (and it is a COFF
format file).
Now I tested this on Windows up to a point: I used the cross-built
object file successfully on Windows, but that was before deciding
to rename it as gretlres.coff. So I need to do some more testing
today. The best solution would be to get the icons to come out
properly on Windows, and to remove the object file from CVS.

Then the process starts again, until I get the following error:

A follow up:
I also got the following message (translated from Swedish): "This program
could not be started because libglib-2.0-0.dll could not be found".
I copied that file from c:\mingw\bin to c:\mingw\winbuild\misc-dll and then
the process starts again and finishes successfully. However, when I go to
c:\gretl\win32\windist\gretl and double-click on gretlw32 I get the same
error message as above.
After copying the file to c:\gretl\win32\windist\gretl I get the same error
message for the files libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll, libgdk_pixbuf-2.0-0.dll,
libgio-2.0-0.dll, libgmodule-2.0-0.dll, libgobject-2.0-0.dll,
libcairo-2.dll, libpango-1.0-0.dll, libpangocairo-1.0-0.dll,
libpangowin32-1.0-0.dll, libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll and libatk-1.0-0.dll.
After these are copied from the file installed from
http://gretl.sourceforge.net/win32/ I can at least start gretl. However,
some of the icons in the bottom row are missing, the "emulate windows look"
is not working, and gnuplot has not been installed, so viewing graphs is
not working. Finally, starting gretlcli works but after the Current session
row there are two roes that says "Couldn't open registry".
Following this I type "make dist" which produces a setup file in
c:\gretl\win32\windist\Output
To get this working, I had also changed line 27 in mkwindist to
INNO_CMD="c:/program/innose~1/iscc.exe" since I have Inno Setup installed
there.
Installing this version produce the same errors as above.

New subject: Full success (almost)
Finally, I have succeeded in building gretl on windows xp:
The culprit was lines 199 and 200 in mkwindist. The file endings had to be
changed to .gz. Then, running gretlw32 in c:\gretl\win32\windist\gretl
starts the program without problems. However, the graphs does not work.
Running the gretl_install.exe file from c:\gretl\win32\windist\output
installs a fully working copy of gretl, with the graphs working. Great!

The files in c:\gretl\win32\windist\gretl work well (even graphs) after
installing the full version with gretl_install.exe in c:\program\gretl. I
assume it had something with the windows registry to do. However,
gretlcli.exe still give the same messages about "couldn't open registry".
But that is minor problems.

I'll look into the gretlcli registry thing, but I think it's
probably not really a problem.
In general (as you have found!), it will be difficult if not
impossible to run gretl as built on Windows without first running
the installer to get all the files into the right relative
positions and to establish the appropriate registry entries.
However, after you've run the installer once, it should be
possible to _update_ the installation by simply copying the
updated files from the build tree to their final position, e.g.
under
c:\program files\gretl
(without having to create and run a new installer). I'm working
on a shell script that will do that job.

That's odd. The files have extension ".tgz" on the server. Maybe
the filenames somehow were automatically changed on download since

First of all, thanks for your efforts. I have tried the wininstall.sh
script by typing "wininstall.sh" in MSYS under c:\gretl\win32, and gets the
errors below. The only misc-dll files I have are installed at
c:\mingw\winbuild\misc-dll. Likewise, the gui2 files are at c:\gretl\gui2,
share is at c:\gretl\share, pixmaps is at c:\gretl\pixmaps, the .hlp file
are at c:\mingw\winbuild\help, and so on.
I suppose this explains these errors.

Oof, thanks. I put that script together too hastily. The script
references the locations $WINFILES and $TOPDIR without giving
these variables any definition. No wonder it doesn't work!
I'll try to commit a fixed version today.
