Hi,
I've read about the support that Windows 10 (64bit only I think) offers
to run Linux non-graphical programs. Today I tested successfully that it
is possible to build the Linux version of gretl from source on Windows
10 like this:
1) Install WSL as per Microsoft's instructions
(https://docs.microsoft.com/de-de/windows/wsl/install-win10). This is
quick, but reboot required.
2) Download and install a Linux distro in the format suitable for WSL. I
used Debian (stretch) from here: https://aka.ms/wsl-debian-gnulinux, but
on the page https://docs.microsoft.com/de-de/windows/wsl/install-manual
there are also other links.
3) Inside this Debian quasi-install, edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file
to add to the existing lines the corresponding source entries starting
with deb-src.
4) Do "sudo apt build-dep gretl", which then takes almost 1GB of disk space.
5) Download the gretl source archive, for example with wget. (Remember
the whole thing is command-line only, not GUI programs are possible.)
6) Unpack it with "tar xf gretl<.....>xz"
7) Go into this new directory and do "./configure" and then "make" as
usual.
This worked for me without errors.
Of course it's not really necessary to cross-compile a Linux build on
Windows. But perhaps it would also be possible to use this Linux
subsystem to compile for the Windows target platform. Then this method
could replace the MinGW/Msys way of doing it. (Following Allin's
instruction in the past I was also able to build on Windows with MinGW,
but I believe with the WSL it might be easier.)

Windows. But perhaps it would also be possible to use this Linux
subsystem to compile for the Windows target platform. Then this method

Thanks for this summary, Sven. Actually the cooperation between MS and
Canonical exists since a couple of years and this kind of Linux support
was already supported for Win 7 -- if I remember correctly. Somehow only
very few people, even among the IT nerds I know, are really aware of
this nice feature.

Thanks for this summary, Sven. Actually the cooperation between MS and
Canonical exists since a couple of years and this kind of Linux
support was already supported for Win 7 -- if I remember correctly.
Somehow only very few people, even among the IT nerds I know, are
really aware of this nice feature.
I'm not 100% sure, but I'm not aware that it is possible to install an
entire distro like Debian within Win 7, and then use tools like
"apt-get" to download more standard packages from that distro. I believe
the breadth of the support used to be much less than it is in WSL in Win10.

All quite interesting. But I'm not sure why one would want to
build/run a Linux version of gretl on Windows when you can build and
run a native Windows version.
I find that MSYS2 works very well for building on Windows. The only
downside I can see is that the build is very slow compared to that on
Linux, but when incrementally updating a build from git sources that's
not a very big deal.

Indeed, the idea was not to build a Linux version in the end. I believe
that you, Allin, used to cross-compile the Windows builds on Linux. And
I conjectured that this cross-compilation setup might be easier to
organize and configure than the Msys-setup. But this assumption could be
totally wrong.
I find that MSYS2 works very well for building on Windows. The only

I found the setup of MSYS2/MinGW on Windows a bit of a hassle. You wrote
an excellent guide on that, but again I find it easier to set up the
Linux build environment. But of course it has a lot to do with habit
formation.

Indeed, the idea was not to build a Linux version in the end. I believe that

Ah, I see. The gretl for Windows packages are still cross-built on
Linux (I run Windows only when absolutely necessary to test things). I
suppose that cross-compiling for Windows under Linux on Windows (heh!)
ought to work, though it seems kinda convoluted.
