Ah of course, I had the line with pi in front of me (but no clear error
message because of the MPI stuff I guess).

Well it turned out that it had been deprecated for five years, didn't
it? OTOH was there ever a deprecation warning like with "=" instead of
"==", or the scanf command? If not, then perhaps spit out a warning now
and wait for one more version.
In any case, all function packages need to be tested I guess (but you
are doing that anyway I think?).
