This particular package uses MPI, I have no idea whether that's the cause, or

don't know, either, which is the first snapshot between August and today
which starts failing.
That's because we trashed "pi" in favor of "$pi". SVAR needs
(actually now done in git). But maybe we should back off and reinstate
the old alias for now?
