Hi there,
the date of modification in the folder browser from gretl is always unknown (see below).

I have this problem every since I remember... but if that could be solved somehow, that
would be nice (windows 7, 64bit).

I'm not seeing that here (Windows 10). Can anyone else comment?
The problem reported is that the "Modified" column in the (GTK) file
chooser dialog shows "unknown" for all files -- for Frederik and Sven
at least, and I presume others. For me it shows dates of last
modification, as expected.
Googling this I came across

So some people have seen the same issue with Gimp on Windows, but I
didn't see any definite diagnosis.

Hi,
I hope to understand ok.
In my system: Windows 10, gretl 2017d-git MS Windowsx86_64 (2017/10/24),
I change the languague to German, and with Datei->Öffne Daten->Benutzedatei... in
'Letzte Änderung' the date seems ok.
In my language (Galician) also is OK.
But when I change the languague to Automatic or English, then appears 'Unknown'.

Strange, I wanted to check (here on Windows 7) the $lang setting (which
gives me de_DE as expected), and I've noticed that the issue is gone,
with language preference set to Automatic.
Just before that check I restarted gretl because for some other reason
it was set to English.
@Frederik: Does a gretl restart change anything for you?
However, setting it back to "English" (and restarting gretl again,
obviously), the problem re-appears.
This is with an Oct 23rd snapshot, so can't be due to any changes Allin
may or may not have applied in the meantime.

I have not made any relevant changes lately. I don't fully
understand this problem yet but I can see it's a GTK-on-Windows
issue, which arises when the "system codepage" and the "C-library
codepage" are not the same. Under certain conditions GTK can't
figure out what locale it should be using to display dates/times and
so it just prints "Unknown".
I think I can see a way of working around the problem by modifying
the GTK source file gtkfilechooserdefault.c -- when GTK stalls on
the locale we could just print the information in generic ISO format
-- but I can't be sure of that till I'm clearer on exactly how/when
the issue arises.

I'm seeing the standard German date format. For "English" it is an ISO
format I think, yyyy-mm-dd, which is not necessarily the standard
English (US or UK) format I guess.
And BTW, there is no time stamp in any setting, just the date, don't
remember if previous versions had it. Whereas for example LyX does
display also the time of the last change.

Indeed, it's the ISO 8601 fallback that I mentioned.
And BTW, there is no time stamp in any setting, just the date,

You'll see H:M for file modified within the last 24 hours. The GTK
filechooser doesn't show time-of-day for older files.

During testing another thing related to locale settings caught my attention:
I now have language set to German, but deactivated the locale-specific
decimal separator. When I run the SVAR sample script, I'm getting at the
end:

Notice the decimal dots in the matrix printout (as intended), but the
decimal comma in the timing printout at the end. The responsible line in
the script is:
printf "Failed = %d, Time (bootstrap) = %g\n", bfail, $stopwatch
Strangely this does _not_ happen when I have set the language to
"Automatic", as usual.

Indeed, it's the ISO 8601 fallback that I mentioned.
But maybe we can get the right locale to show up... There's now
another 64-bit Windows snapshot in place. I'm not sure this'll work,
and it might even break other aspects of localization, so please
test so I can revert the most recent change if need be.
