I noticed recently that the self-extracting (exe) installers for our textbook data packages weren't working properly on Windows 8, with 64-bit gretl installed. What's supposed to happen is that the exe picks up the path to the gretl installation from the Windows registry and offers it as the default location, but I saw the default come up empty. I think this must be due to the fact that on 64-bit Windows there are two versions or modes of the registry (32- and 64-bit); apparently our (quite old) installers were just looking at the 32-bit registry and hence not finding the entry for gretl. I've now rebuilt the installers using current Inno Setup and tested on Windows 8. I think they should also do the right thing on earlier (and 32-bit) Windows, but it would be nice to have that confirmed. And the tab appears in both cases and all works fine.

My first attempt was to use the gretl version I had already installed (Build on may, 2015) and install Wooldrige data on it. There was not success, the new data did not appeared as a new tab. Then I uninstalled this version of gretl and installed the current Windows version (64bits) in ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu, and installed again the Wooldridge data, now the new Woorldrige tab appears in the data files window.

In this last case can you tell me: 1) when you ran the data installer, what default installation path was shown?

2) Is it the case that gretl is installed in "Program Files (x86)" but the data files were installed under "Program Files"?

I think the installer was getting confused by the presence of a 32-bit gretl installation on a 64-bit system. I believe this should now be fixed (with the help of Inno Setup's pascal scripting facility). There are new builds of the data installers at http://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/pub/gretl/
