Dear All,
Due to Allin I know that my packages
was downloaded more than 12000 times,
but my R package nlwaldTest was downloaded
about 120000 times. In my personal point of vieiw
the gretl package is better, but...

right, but I think we all know that R's popularity is much bigger. To be
honest, I'm surprised that the ratio is only 10:1.
What has already changed in recent snapshots (so will be in gretl 2026c)
is a new top-level menu called "Packages" for better visibility of the
contributed function packages. That could help a little with your
download numbers.

I'm not. CRAN has a much larger offering, so it is very possible for a
perfectly good R package to go unnoticed. The proportion is about 25000
R packages vs 174 gretl packages. The difference comes of course from R
being much more popular, but also from CRAN being full of old,
unmantained and possibly malfunctioning packages.
That said, we've been mulling around the question "why isn't gretl more
popular?" forever, and I think that the answers are well established.
What has already changed in recent snapshots (so will be in gretl
2026c) is a new top-level menu called "Packages" for better visibility
of the contributed function packages. That could help a little with
your download numbers.

Just for clarification: we had a discussion on this at the last dev
meeting in Berlin. My observation is (and I assume not only mine) that
many people don't know that a battery of methods are available as
packages. So, for example, they look for advanced SVAR analysis, dodn't
find SVAR addon and that give up. So _maybe_ putting interface to main
menu will help a little.
The second idea is to work out a dedicated sub-page and we have some
mocup for this
(https://sourceforge.net/p/gretl/workspace/ci/master/tree/misc/pkg_catalogue/),
but it needs a little adjustments.

That's the python script generating the web page. I agree we should link
to it form somewhere, possibly our main webpage, so it can be seen by
robots.

Well, two things:
1. set of categories should be revised as we talked about a week ago;
I'll prepare some draft for the next Wednesday;
2. I think I'll put it on a server which may run python according to
some schedule (once a week, for example) and the HTML it creates will
then accessible by gretl web page

Some note on the numbers: 12000 is for 12 packages. 120000 is for single package.
