I am trying to compile Gretl 1.8.4 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
I do this without using anything from Fink or MacPorts.
With Leopard this went smoothly.
However on Snow Leopard Gretl's libtool generates an error.
The error is that /usr/lib/libiconv.la cannot be found.
(In addition there is also no /usr/lib/libxml2.la)
Apparently in Snow Leopard there are no .la files for anything that
is in /usr/lib.
What could be a solution?

that the Fink and MacPorts people have run into this too. I find
the discussions confusing and I'm not sure yet what the right
solution is.

Apple has not provided any .la files.
There is a script to generate .la files but for the time being I'm
going to wait.

Apple has not provided any .la files.
The first of these is quite useful. I think I may understand a
bit better now. It seems that for libtool to work you need either
all the relevant .la files or none. The show-stopper is not just
that certain .la files don't exist any more on OS X, but that
these non-existent files are referenced in other .la files.
You could try this experiment: go to
/Library/Frameworks/GTK+.framework/Resources/lib
and (probably after backing them up) delete all the *.la files in
that directory. Also (if necessary) track down and delete any .la
files in other directories from which libraries are pulled into
the gretl build (in my case that would include /usr/local/lib).
Then try running gretl's configure script again and see if make
works.

I can't test on 10.6, but I tried a related experiment on 10.4.11.
cd /Library/Frameworks/GTK+.framework
tar cvfz ~/la.tgz `find . -name "*.la"`
sudo find . -name "*.la" | xargs rm
Then I went to the gretl source and did
./configure <options>
make clean
make
This worked OK. (The "make clean" step was required, to flush out
references to the GTK+ .la files.)

The solution for compiling Gretl on Snow Leopard is as follows:
1. delete all .la files in the GTK+.framework
Needed since Apple has removed many/all .la files from /usr./lib
2. define CC="gcc -arch i386" for configure.
This is absolutely required since on Snow Leopard the default is 64
bits.
And everything compiled must be 32 bits for Gretl to work.
The CC define is the only way to get consistent 32bits compile and
link.
There is no need to modify anything in the source tarball.

seems to work OK on Linux. Your dependency libs would have to be

No. 2 architectures. i386 and ppc only.

Are you sure you have a compatible version of Xcode for OS X 10.6?
It would seem surprising if Apple has broken support for libtool,
since it's the de facto standard build mechanism for libraries in
the free software world.

Just some more information.
In the past, I have also been able to build Gnumeric on Mac OS X
Leopard and build a Gnumeric.app.
On Snow Leopard this now also fails with a message similar to that
with Gretl:
libtool: link: `/usr/X11/lib/libXrender.la' is not a valid libtool
archive
All broken. Haven't got a clue.
