Hello, gretl developers.
I'm trying to start a translation of help files into russian on
launchpad.net as it seems to be the most suitable tool to participate
for all familiars with econometrics but not with gettext, linux. cvs,
etc.
The problem is that there is already a project for gretl on launchpad
and it is strongly prohibited to start more than one project for a
single program. I cannot contact with Constantine Tsardounis for about
a month, so I think it is time to re-assign that project to someone
else. On the irc-channel of launchpad I was told that
Our admins can re-assign the project to new owners but we'd prefer to
hear from the upstream owners. can you get one of them to submit a
question here:

But if nobody from main developers wants to register and do something
at launchpad it is possible to assign this function to me and in that
case a letter in this list will probably be enough.
I have prepared a .po-file for genr_funcs.xml and gretl_commands.xml
with the help of po4a utility and got 1511 strings for translation
(strings a rather big).

Pleased to read that. If anyone is willing to translate help system in
some other languages with the help of launchpad he is probably should
generate a .po-file himself with the .pot-file (As far as i understood
with the usual gettext-tools .po-files are generated from .pot-file
wich is single for all languages. And also some explicit settings
about plural forms must be done in .po-file which I can not do not
knowing other languages). It can be found here

I've just downloaded the gretl_help.pot file and create a
gretl_help_pt_BR.po file (using Poedit software). But I'm not sure about
this process (I'm not a computer expert ;).
So, I would like kindly to request you to take a look at the file just to
verify if I did the right thing. Is it possible?

Hello Gretl developers.
Henrique recently wrote me to know how are things going with translating of
gretl help on the launchpad.
How about resurrecting this process? Currently the situation is the
following:
1. In the Launchpad there are partial translations (33% for Brazilian
Portuguese and 13% for Russian) for old versions of gretl_commands.xml and
genr_funcs.xml. https://translations.launchpad.net/gretl/trunk
2. I have generated the new .pot file for these two xmls and uploaded it to
Launchpad. https://translations.launchpad.net/gretl/trunk/+imports I
suppose it will be imported by some backend Launchpad job and will update
the .po file for the translations.
3. After that we will be able to download the po files for translation and
produce files:
gretl_commands_pt_BR.xml
gretl_commands_ru.xml
genr_func_pt_BR.xml
genr_func_ru.xml
with partial translations that will be up-to-date with current
gretl_commands.xml
genr_func.xml
So how about placing po4a.cfg to the cvs? All current files are on
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qh3vwh8qmijjvxb/G72hFXmeEG (with no actual
translations yet). So if someone will want to translate gretl into new
language he will (e.g. for AZ language):
1. Modify po4a.cfg adding "az:gretl_help-az.po" strings by example of
already existing strings for ru, pt_BR and others.
2. Generate new gretl_help.pot file from the up-to-date xmls:
$po4a -k 0 po4a.cfg
3. Ask someone to upload new .pot to Launchpad (currently only me - I will
be happy to add others to maintainers of the project at launchpad)
4. Make partial translation.
5. Download gretl-help-az.po file from launchpad.
6. Generate
gretl_commands_az.xml
genr_func_az.xml
fiels and send them to gretl-devel.
If we will want to update existing translation with the help of Launchpad
(most likely while the translation is less then 100% ready but maybe used

Hi,
I had a bad experience with that system. I have lost some hours of
editing when first trying the system, so never went back to it.
I am updating manually (CVS) gretl_commands_pt.xml so I would not like
to see it changed from launchpad. I always have gretl_commands_pt.xml
in synch with gretl_commands.xml in CVS, that is another reason not to
use launchpad (in my view).
For the help (and PDF) system, we do not have a PT/PT_BR distintion, I
think that we should opt by one variant (PT_BR which has more
"customers").

Thanks for feedback, Helio. I'm not confident nor in PT, nor in PT_BR. It
is up to you and others whether separate translation is needed.
How are the other other parts of help system are built? Maybe the similar
approach with po4a can be used to semi-automate translation of them two?
New .pot files have been imported to launchpad and I have produced the
up-to-date versions of
genr_func_ru.xml and and gretl_commands_ru.xml. Is there an easy way to
know is everything alright with these files? I mean - some tags are inside
strings for translations on launchpad and accidental breakage of them by
translator may cause invalid xml, also something may go wrong with the
automatic update of .pot translation template in launchpad, or maybe po4a
may produce not consistent result (some years ago I heard it was not very
stable).
Maybe try package gretl with these translation and see whether there are
any errors?

I really think translating using PO files easier and funnier :-)
The use of PO makes things more clear for someone like me
that doesn't know enough programming.
Let me tell you my personal experience with the translation of
the help system.
Some time ago, I tried to translate the help system directly from
the XML files. The problem with that approach is that I got stuck
in many occasions because I did not know if some words are
"translatable" words or "xml" words.
In addition, it was hard to maintain things up to date every
time Allin and Jack changed the English help files.
That said, I can see some possibilities. Instead of adding part
of the Gretl project into Launchpad, we could just transform the
XML files into PO files using po4a and put the PO files into CVS.
This is a really good approach for an inexperienced translator
like me :-), but it introduces two more steps into Allin's work: He
will need to create the PO and, after our translation work, he will
generate the XML files.
Because our programmers (Allin and Jack) have really enough
work in developing and maintenance of Gretl, I think that
suggestion is not good.
That said, I'll keep working on PO files created by Ivan until I can
make a "complete" translation. During this time, I'll try to learn
more about XML in order to update the translation without using
PO files, as suggested by Hélio.

I think it is better to try building Gretl with partial translation (5% of
translated strings is enough) to not trap into situation when produced, but
already translated xmls are wrong and require some really tricky work to
repair them. After the translation process with the po4a is verified to
produce technically valid and usable translations it will be reasonable to
put some work into this process.
I'm java programmer and have recently got my dose of building C-program at
work (with aclocal, autoconf, automake) but still do not understand what is
going on in this world. So I can not promise that I will be capable of
verifying this process myself.
